Official portrait of John Joyce

John Joyce

House · PA · Republican · 7 years in office

Automotive & Manufacturing · strongest measured alignment

Against House Republicans in the mid-spectrum third of their party, John Joyce takes an unusually large share of automotive & manufacturing money and votes that industry’s way unusually often. The index is the geometric mean of those two residuals: 0.53 on money, 0.20 on votes.

Basis: $42,000 in direct PAC money from the industry, 7 roll calls, compared against 52 peers.

It is a measure of alignment, not of wrongdoing. Taking money from an industry you already agree with is ordinary politics and entirely legal.

Residuals are standard deviations from the peer-group mean. The index counts only where both are positive.

What this does not mean

It is a statistical association between contributions received and votes cast, relative to comparable legislators. It is not a finding of corruption, bribery, or any other crime, and this site makes no such allegation about any person named on it. Accepting lawful contributions from an industry whose position you already hold is ordinary politics: a legislator from a farm state who votes for farm programmes and takes agribusiness money may simply be representing their constituents. Causation cannot be read off this data in either direction. A high index is a reason to look more closely at a relationship, and nothing more than that.
